The Great Abduction

The Ramayana is not merely a story in Bali — it is a living cosmology that shapes ceremony, dance, painting, and carving to this day. Among its most dramatic episodes is the abduction of Sita by the demon king Ravana: disguised as a wandering holy man, Ravana lures Sita from the protection of the sacred circle drawn by Lakshmana and sweeps her into his flying chariot. This moment of violation and divine fate has inspired Balinese artists for centuries.

The carver has rendered the scene at its apex of tension — Sita's expression a combination of fear and dignity, Ravana revealed in his true demonic form, the sky-chariot churning with supernatural energy. The depth of relief allows the figures to exist in distinct spatial planes, creating a narrative clarity that draws the viewer's eye through the scene like a moving image.

Craftsmanship & Creation

This panel is carved from a single block of Magnolia Champaca wood — a species native to Indonesia prized by carvers for its fine, even grain and warm golden tone that deepens with age. Using traditional chisels and gouges, a master artisan dedicates approximately 3–4 weeks of focused work to bring this scene to life. No CNC machines. No power tools for detail work. Every line, curve, and texture is the direct result of a human hand guiding a blade through wood.

The depth of relief on this panel is approximately 70mm (2.7 inches), which is exceptional for a piece of this size. This depth creates dramatic shadow play that shifts throughout the day as natural light moves across the surface — transforming the panel into a living artwork that changes with the hours.
