The Chariot of Dharma

The chariot of Arjuna, guided by Krishna across the field of Kurukshetra, is one of the most powerful images in world literature. At the moment before the great battle of the Mahabharata, Arjuna falters — overwhelmed by the sight of his kinsmen on the opposing side. It is here that Krishna delivers the Bhagavad Gita, one of Hinduism's most sacred texts. This relief panel renders that pivotal moment: the chariot between armies, the universe holding its breath.

The carver has given Arjuna a posture of noble hesitation and Krishna a gesture of divine instruction — a compositional achievement that captures the psychological core of the scene rather than merely its action. The horses of the chariot are carved with the muscular tension of animals about to charge, while the battlefield backdrop hints at the scale of what is about to unfold.

Craftsmanship & Creation

This panel is carved from a single block of Magnolia Champaca wood — a species native to Indonesia prized by carvers for its fine, even grain and warm golden tone that deepens with age. Using traditional chisels and gouges, a master artisan dedicates approximately 3–4 weeks of focused work to bring this scene to life. No CNC machines. No power tools for detail work. Every line, curve, and texture is the direct result of a human hand guiding a blade through wood.

The depth of relief on this panel is approximately 70mm (2.7 inches), which is exceptional for a piece of this size. This depth creates dramatic shadow play that shifts throughout the day as natural light moves across the surface — transforming the panel into a living artwork that changes with the hours.
