The Final Gathering

The Last Supper — the final meal shared by Jesus and his twelve apostles before the crucifixion — is one of the most depicted scenes in the history of Western art. What makes this Balinese interpretation remarkable is that it approaches this foundational Christian narrative through the visual language of Indonesian relief carving: the figures rendered with the expressive stylisation of Balinese artistry, the composition adapted to the horizontal format of a wall panel.

The carver has honoured both the iconographic requirements of the subject and the aesthetic traditions of Balinese wood sculpture: Jesus is centred with clarity, the apostles arranged in naturalistic conversation around the table, and the depth of relief creates a three-dimensional presence that gives the scene the gravity of a devotional object rather than a decorative reproduction.

Craftsmanship & Creation

This panel is carved from a single block of Magnolia Champaca wood — a species native to Indonesia prized by carvers for its fine, even grain and warm golden tone that deepens with age. Using traditional chisels and gouges, a master artisan dedicates approximately 3–4 weeks of focused work to bring this scene to life. No CNC machines. No power tools for detail work. Every line, curve, and texture is the direct result of a human hand guiding a blade through wood.

The depth of relief on this panel is approximately 70mm (2.7 inches), which is exceptional for a piece of this size. This depth creates dramatic shadow play that shifts throughout the day as natural light moves across the surface — transforming the panel into a living artwork that changes with the hours.
