The Gathering

In their tropical forest paradise, two elephant families come together for a gathering — socialising, playing, and caressing each other with their trunks in the unmistakable display of affection that defines elephant social bonds. Few animal behaviours communicate emotional intelligence as clearly as this trunk-to-trunk greeting between herds.

The carver has arranged the two families across the composition with genuine social logic — matriarchs near the centre, calves tucked close, the trunks reaching toward one another forming the emotional and visual anchor of the scene. It is a panel about connection as much as it is about elephants.

Craftsmanship & Creation

This grand panel is carved from a single block of Magnolia Champaca wood — a species native to Indonesia prized by carvers for its fine, even grain and warm golden tone that deepens with age. Using traditional chisels and gouges, a master artisan dedicates approximately 5–6 weeks of focused work to bring this large-format scene to life. No CNC machines. No power tools for detail work. Every line, curve, and texture is the direct result of a human hand guiding a blade through wood.

At nearly 39 inches wide, the panel's scale allows both elephant families to be rendered with genuine presence, the deep relief creating dramatic shadow play that shifts throughout the day.
